INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
WELCOME TO THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Instrumental Music students receive classical training in applied music, music theory (reading and writing) and piano, and participate in performing ensembles. Major ensembles include: Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and String Ensemble. Smaller ensembles draw from students in each studio.
Students perform annually as soloists at monthly recitals and prepare a 20-minute solo recital in their senior year. Music electives for third- and fourth-year students include composition, music technology, and music history.

MISSION STATEMENT
Instrumental Music department graduates should
cultivate a clearer vision of possible careers, a variety of music genres, and resources beyond initial knowledge at the start of our students' Duke Ellington School of the Arts matriculation. There should be deeper knowledge and a new level of discipline and maturity. Graduating seniors should be able to:
1) Perform a successful audition for any postsecondary institution for any music degree.
2) Demonstrate the level of musical competence
necessary for college courses in performance
technique, music reading, and writing.
3) Demonstrate performance skills that show an
understanding of the techniques of instrumental
performance.

INFORMATION ON STUDIO ART FEES
Duke Ellington students are required to pay a yearly activity
fee of $200, which directly benefits the arts department in which they are enrolled. This fee should be paid at the time of registration but can be paid in installments. Money orders and checks should be made payable to DESAP (in the memo portion of the check: Instrumental Music Department).
Arts fees help provide the “must haves” that include, but are not limited to: Instrumental Music – Instrument purchases, repairs, and accessories, headphones, and sheet music.
