Duke Ellington School of the Arts was established in 1974 by two trailblazing African American artists and activists, Peggy Cooper-Cafritz and Mike Malone. 50 years later, Ellington, in partnership with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The George Washington University, The Ellington Fund, and the District of Columbia Public School System, is still successfully providing a college preparatory and life-changing arts education to District youth, regardless of background or ability to pay. and author.
